Time to clamp down on boy racers

Sunday 12th July 2009, 22:04

Ryan Moses, secretary of West Tyrone Young Unionists has welcomed new legislation introduced by the PSNI which will see stricter policy in relation to vehicle seizure.

Referring to the Criminal Justice legislation introduced recently Mr Moses said; “This change in legislation is long overdue and I welcome the news that police officers will now have the authority to seize vehicles which are causing nuisance. The problem of cars and racers in not a new one, and in urban areas such as Castlederg, this is a particular problem. I am very aware of the problem in Castlederg but our constituency office is always receiving  complaints about these so-called ‘boy racers’ who repeatedly drive through the town, through residential areas where young children may be playing causing frustration to those who live in the area.”

“Up until this point residents have been left discouraged and angry as although they repeatedly complain to the police about noisy vehicles or inappropriate driving the police seemed unable to do much about it.  Now the PSNI will have the power to seize and remove the motor vehicle if they feel that the driver is causing alarm, distress or annoyance to residents living near by.  For those who have been affected by this constant nuisance this updated legislation is most welcome news”
